Deckbuilding basics: consistency beats power
Every new player's first instinct is to build around the biggest attacker they own. Every experienced player's first instinct is to ask a different question: how often does this deck actually do the thing it's supposed to do?
That's not a rhetorical question — it's a number, and it's the whole idea behind TCG Tools. But you don't need the app to think this way. Here's the version of deck theory that matters before you open any tool.
Power is conditional. Consistency is structural.
A powerful attacker that shows up turn 2 in one game and turn 6 in the next isn't actually powerful — it's a coin flip with good production values. The strongest decks in any format aren't usually running the single best card available; they're running a plan that comes together the same way most of the time.
Two decks can have identical win conditions and completely different real-world win rates, purely because one of them mulligans less, bricks less, and gets to its plan a turn earlier on average. That gap is consistency, and it's mostly a function of deckbuilding decisions you make before you ever shuffle up.
The three levers that actually move consistency
1. Basic Pokémon count. Every basic Pokémon in your deck is a card that can open your hand legally. Fewer basics means a higher mulligan rate, full stop — and a mulligan doesn't just cost you a card, it gives your opponent extra draws too. This is a numbers question, not a feel question: the difference between 7 and 9 basics in a 60-card deck is a real, calculable swing in how often you're starting the game already behind.
2. Your draw and search package. The cards that dig you toward your plan — draw supporters, search effects, anything that turns a dead draw into a live one — don't win games by themselves, but they're what keeps your average game close to your best game instead of your worst one. A deck with a thin draw package has high variance: sometimes it looks unbeatable, sometimes it does nothing, and you don't get to pick which game you're playing until it's already started.
3. Energy count and attachment math. Running too little energy means your attackers exist on paper but never actually swing. Running too much means dead draws late. The right number isn't a round number someone told you once — it's a function of your curve, your acceleration, and how many attackers you're actually trying to feed.
"It felt consistent in testing" isn't data
Here's the trap: if you playtest a deck ten times and it works eight of those times, that feels like a good deck. It might be. It might also be a deck that works 65% of the time and you got lucky, or one that works 85% of the time and you got unlucky — ten games isn't enough to tell the difference, and human memory rounds toward whichever result felt more dramatic.
The actual answer isn't a feeling, it's a hypergeometric calculation — the exact odds of drawing what you need, given exactly what's in your deck. That's a big enough idea that it gets its own post. The short version: the math is knowable, it takes seconds to check, and it's usually more surprising than your gut.
